Tell Your Transportation Leader: Safe Routes to School Matter!

The Issue

Exercise is an important component to a healthy lifestyle, and a habit best formed at a young age. Creating safe routes to school helps children build physical activity into their everyday lives. And, when children are active, they tend to perform better in the classroom.

Safe Routes to School projects can also save lives. In 2009, approximately 23,000 children ages 5-15 were injured and more than 250 were killed while walking or bicycling in the United States. Research has shown that safe routes to school projects can reduce child pedestrian injuries by 44 percent.
