Tell Your State Senator: Tom Corbett’s Gas Plan Won’t Work
The Issue
The Corbett Plan: You pay more. The world’s largest companies pay less. Your air and water get worse. Nobody does anything about it.
With little oversight and no severance tax, oil and gas companies have made billions fracking Pennsylvania for natural gas, but aren’t paying their fair share to support the state. Without the resources to inspect and mitigate the damage, Pennsylvania’s environmental cops can’t protect us. Unless our state leaders act fast, they’ll leave behind a legacy of toxic chemical pollution in our air and drinking water that could cause cancer, birth defects, and other catastrophic illnesses.
Governor Tom Corbett and his allies in the legislature have made it easier for corporations to drill unchecked and untaxed. They refused to force drillers to disclose to doctors which chemicals they use, even when patients have been directly exposed to them. Instead of implementing a fair tax on drilling, they sold off our state parks and forests to the gas drillers, and gave Pennsylvania the highest gasoline tax in the United States!
Governor Corbett's refusal to tax natural gas companies cost Pennsylvania $1.5 billion in the last three years. Meanwhile, Pennsylvania has a billion dollar budget deficit with severely underfunded environmental protection and a funding crisis in our public schools. To make up for that deficit, local governments across the state have been forced to raise property taxes.
Gas companies pay no severance tax. We pay more for homes and cars. Gas companies threaten our air and water. We get fewer environmental cops to hold them accountable. Something has to change.
It is time to tax gas drilling in Pennsylvania, just like they do in the other big gas producing states. It’s time for gas companies to pay their fair share, and for Pennsylvania to have the resources to protect our health, keep a close eye on gas drillers, and educate the next generation.
Tell your State Senator that Corbett’s failed policies aren’t working. Tell them that gas drillers should pay their fair share to keep Pennsylvania healthy and safe.
