Tell University of Sheffield to verify sustainability information and plan for Net Zero

The Issue

There are only 6 years left until 2030.

The University of Sheffield needs to publicly commit to reaching its targets to eliminate its large contribution to global emissions. Students deserve to know that these are not  empty promises and that the University is taking an active political stance that their role in contributing to climate change will be mitigated.

The Student’s Union Sustainability Committee (SustCom) is calling on the University of Sheffield to complete the following actions by the start of the Spring Semester on 5th February 2024:

  1. Update the ‘live’ Sustainability Action Plan and add lead contacts for action themes. This has not been updated since March 2022 and students should know the status of the University’s sustainability actions and who to contact regarding each action to enable better collaboration across the university.
  2. Improve communication of information. Redesign the front page of MUSE to increase the visibility of the university’s sustainability actions to students, releasing a summary of current emissions and the plans to get Net Zero done. Sustainability information is not easily visible unless you are looking for it, and so students may currently feel they do not know what the University is doing for sustainability.
  3. Publish a pledge addressed to students. This is to be signed by the University Executive Board committing publicly to reaching their net zero target and verifying the published actions.

Tell the University you are watching them get it done by signing now.
