Summary of "The OMO Man … Unkept Promise!"
I was born in a small Egyptian village called Meet Sweed, reflects on a story from his past involving a broken promise by the "OMO man," a representative from the OMO detergent brand. As a child, I witnessed a promotion by OMO in his village, where the OMO man promised prizes for collecting detergent bags, including cash and electronics like TVs and washing machines. The children, including and me enthusiastically participated, collecting many bags and bringing them to the mosque as instructed. However, after the OMO man collected the bags, he disappeared, never returning with the promised rewards.
Years later, I revisit the village while working on a documentary and meet children who still remember the OMO man’s unkept promise. They express their disappointment and feel deceived, with one girl saying, "The OMO man lied to us" and another stating that he is "a liar before God." Despite their disillusionment, they are willing to forgive but hold the OMO man accountable to a higher moral standard.
Tharwat, who had promised the children to tell their story, eventually remembers his vow years later when he stumbles upon old footage of the conversation. Now living in the U.S. and working as a TV host, I set out to fulfill his promise. He reaches out to Unilever, OMO’s parent company, asking them to make things right and restore trust in the OMO brand, but he has not received a response. Tharwat’s mission now is to return to Egypt, find the children, and share their story, urging Unilever to honor the OMO man’s original promise and rebuild credibility with the villagers.
The narrative contrasts the failure of the OMO man to keep his word with Tharwat's commitment to fulfill his own promise, showcasing the impact of broken trust and the importance of integrity.
