We all eat, but what we are eating isn't well labeled or regulated. This rule change was put on the docket in the waning days of the Bush Administration. If adopted, it will seriously weaken regulation of genetically engineered foods and pharmaceutical drugs being grown inside of crops.

Sample draft letter (please use your own words).

Regarding Docket No. APHIS-2008-0023 -- Importation, Interstate Movement, and Release into the Environment of Certain Genetically Engineered Organisms.

This draft should be rejected entirely. Instead of tightening government controls to protect us as consumers, implementing these regulations would continue to allow open fields of crops producing drugs and industrial chemicals. In most cases the industry would decide if new GE crops should be regulated. Self regulation simply doesn't work when there is money to be made.

This draft would take away the ability of states and localities to pass regulations for GE crops that are stricter than the federal regulations. Communities have the right to control their own safety as they see best.

I urge you to withdraw these proposed rules and suspend all new GE crop approvals until new true safety rules can be put in place.

Sincerely,
(Your name)
