Tell the TTC to close Queen Street AFTER the holiday shopping and dining season

The Issue

The TTC has already closed one of Toronto's main shopping streets – Queen Street West – for the past 6 weeks, resulting in major revenue losses for local businesses.

It is now planning to close Queen Street from Bathurst to Shaw Street during the time that is most critical for all retailers - the month of December.  (photo credit: blogTO)

This comes immediately after local retailers, restaurants and services have barely survived and are still trying to cope with losses from North America's longest closures due to COVID-19.

The closing of the street for TTC repairs will most certainly result in the permanent closure of numerous local businesses, along with the personal economic fallout for the owners and their families, job losses and further erosion of civic and social vibrancy.

Sign this petition to get the TTC to delay this construction until January 1 and give these local business owners the best chances of recovering from all that has happened to them in the past 2 years.

There are over 300 local businesses that will be impacted, some catastrophically, if this construction takes place during the year’s busiest retail season.

Already one business has shut permanently, saying the current TTC work on Queen from Bathurst to Niagara has been “the final nail in the coffin”.

We are not asking the TTC to stop construction, just delay it until after the holiday shopping and socializing season.

The TTC is overseen by elected officials who can delay this construction and prevent these economic consequences. It is also influenced by elected representatives in the Toronto City Council and Parliament of Ontario – which both have elections in 2022.

Let these elected officials know that the health of local businesses and the benefits they bring to a community are important to you.

SIGN THIS PETITION and ask them to DELAY TTC work on Queen Street West until January.
