KPBS has just announced a new online tool that it claims will help San Diegans track water supply conditions. It is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of the facts, and is useless. Worse, it misleads the public. It is yet another example of the media pushing an agenda.
They want you to believe that we have a water shortage, instead of telling you the truth: the main reason your rates are (just now) starting to spike 50 percent and more, and the main reason why the bureaucrats are soon to make water allocations permanent, has nothing to do with the weather; it is the direct result of Jerry Brown's illegal, politically-motivated, and unconscionable "executive order".
Tell KPBS to fix this so-called "drought tracker", or take down. Tell KPBS to start reporting factually.
KPBS's "drought tracker" is a fun gimmick, but is useless in educating the public about our water supply conditions. The vast majority of our water comes from the Colorado River, the ocean (starting next month), and local sources (recycled water and local rain capture). This "tracker" tracks precipitation in the areas that are our LEAST important source of water - the Sierras. So, KPBS tracks precipitation in the region that contributes only 5 percent of our water (current figure), and ignores the areas that provide 95 percent of our water. Useless.
Furthermore, it promotes the false narrative that there is some direct connection between rain in California and local water supply. Even when it rains and snows in California, environmental groups hire lawyers who divert most of that water not to the benefit of our homes, businesses and farms, but instead send it out to sea. KPBS's tracker fails to acknowledge this fact: it can snow for years, but these groups will never let us use the water. At the same time, Jerry Brown has issued an order (which he will soon make permanent) that prohibits us from using the water that we already have, and have good reason to expect we will have for many decades to come. He is the main reason that our rates will rise more than 50 percent in the next few years.
KPBS needs to throw out this useless "tracker" and replace it with something useful. As it stands, it is not only useless, it is harmful.
