Unfortunately, today the United States Supreme Court (aka "The highest court in all the land") deemed it lawful for cities to punish homeless people for sleeping outside.
In some states, this could mean forcibly institutionalizing people. In others, it could mean fines or jail.
Once again I reiterate that being homeless -- being human and existing in a public space -- is not a crime.
Being unhoused is not a choice. Having nowhere to go is not a choice.
Today, the State of California, SCOTUS, and many other states are standing on the wrong side of history. My heart is weeping. I am grieving.

One of my favorite quotes is this: "Get on your knees and pray, then get on your feet and work."
It's time to work.
We may have lost this battle, but let's continue to fight for the rights of unhoused people. No matter how small the effort, I truly believe you can personally make a difference.
Thank you for signing. I appreciate it more than you could ever know.
