"I don't belong in a nursing home" -- that is what my sister Teresa Pocock emphatically says. And now we have confirmation that the tragedy that Teresa encountered is not unique. See the new report by the Ontario Select Committee on Developmental Services:
"Long-term care homes are pressured to accommodate young and middle-aged people with developmental disabilities without any medical need for this type of care or any training to support this group of clients."

The Waiting Game:
It has now been more than seven months since Teresa was forced into Long-Term Care, against her wishes, and against the wishes of her father (and me!).
1. Teresa is still waiting for an apology from the Rekai Centre, who called the police trying to force her return.
2. We are still waiting to hear what the CCAC discovered in their investigation.
3. Teresa is still waiting for a substantive response from the Hon. Dr. Eric Hoskins and the Ontario Ministry of Health. We submitted our 12-page complaint on April 16th. They have merely confirmed they are “inspecting” the matter.
But the clock is ticking... in fact Teresa just celebrated her 50th birthday yesterday. Please see the visual post we've created to wish her a Happy Birthday. You'll get a sense of the wonderful, wonderful things she's been up to since being freed from the Rekai Centre. People and places and things she never would have experienced if she had stayed there!
Excerpt from Teresa's Birthday Post:
Oh Teresa, the places you’ll go!
The things you will do.
The people you’ll meet.
Fifty years young
And your life has just begun.
Teresa, you're a wonderful,
wonderful, wonderful one!

This battle for Teresa's human rights will not be over until we hear from the government on how they can hold the parties accountable for the wrongs they have done. We need to ensure this never happens again because the history of harm is repeating itself...
The Ontario Select Committee on Developmental Services in their final report writes, "At public hearings across the province many people recalled the painful legacy of the large government-run institutions where people with developmental disabilities were warehoused and excluded from the broader society."
