We have reason to believe that NC Senator Bill Rabon is the main reason no assembly member has stepped up to sponsor a bill to repeal the “Be Cruel To Opossums” statute. Are we in for five or more years of fighting to get #JusticeForMillie? Let’s not let that happen!
Senator Rabon is a veterinarian who demonstrates a lack of regard for animal welfare as well as the opinions of the citizens he represents (Senate District 8: Brunswick, Bladen, Columbus and Pender Counties). Since 2013, Rabon has unilaterally shut down every chance he had to end abuse in NC puppy mills. Yet according to North Carolina Voters for Animal Welfare, 87% of NC citizens want stronger animal welfare laws, including stronger puppy mill bills.
Rabon chairs the powerful Senate Rules Committee, which controls the flow of bills through the chamber, and that power seems to have gone to his head. Speaking about puppy mill legislation to constituents, he said: “I’m in the top five members in power in the Senate. The best shot you folks have ever had, you’re talking to” (WRAL January 28, 2014). He then told the group that the puppy mill protection bill was dead on arrival. That was five years ago, and North Carolina dogs in puppy mills still lack basic protection laws.
Team #JusticeForMillie urges the citizens of North Carolina to call Senator Rabon’s office at (919) 733-5963 and/or email Bill.Rabon@ncleg.net TODAY and let him know you want §113-291.13 Application of wildlife laws to opossums repealed THIS SESSION, before it’s too late.
