Oppose Congressional Delisting of Gray Wolves
The Issue
The National Wildlife Federation (NWF) describes itself on its website as being "a voice for wildlife, dedicated to protecting wildlife and habitat and inspiring the future generation of conservationists."
It was with great surprise then, that I learned that NWF was advising its chapter affiliates to endorse a resolution that supports Congressional efforts that would kick gray wolves in Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin off of the endangered species list.
The NWF's chapter affiliates are voting this weekend on that resolution, and if passed it would add the NWF to anti-wildlife groups such as the National Rifle Association (NRA), Safari Club International (SCI), and Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF) that are supporting this reckless legislation.
Just months ago, a federal court ruled that wolves were entitled to these protections as the FWS had repeatedly failed to comply with the Endangered Species Act and other federal laws in delisting them. These Congressional actions place politics over the law and completely disregard conservation. Moreover, they substitute the will of politicians for sound science. Listing decisions should not be made by Congress, but by scientists acting in accordance with the law.
The National Wildlife Federation should not support these ill-conceived bills that would abandon gray wolves. Please join me in asking the NWF to uphold its mission to protect wildlife.
