Tell government we want more art by women on our gallery walls!

The Issue

We are ARTACTIVISTBARBIE  and ART FOR ALL BY ALL

We love art but we're tired of going into galleries in the UK and finding that nearly all the art is by a small group of white men. So many people feel excluded from the galleries they help to fund.

As well as paintings by men, we want to see paintings by women, people of colour, disabled people – by all kinds of people.

In some galleries, as little as 1% of artworks are by women. Not only that but there are many paintings in which women are objectified, demeaned and even raped.

We are worried about the messages our children are getting when they are taken to public art galleries.

THE SURPRISING THING IS THAT NOTHING IS BEING DONE BY GOVERNMENT TO ADDRESS THIS.

Although the Arts Council are addressing this, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), who fund most of our national galleries and museums, say that galleries are independent and that what goes on their walls is ‘in their hands’.

WE ARE ASKING DCMS TO CHANGE THEIR POSITION ON THIS AND REQUIRE THE GALLERIES THEY FUND TO:

  • review their art collections for inclusion and relevance, and set measurable targets
  • provide commentary about the reasons for certain groups being underrepresented or depicted in certain ways, and what the gallery is doing to address this.
  • ask us, the public, what we would like to see on our gallery walls
  • design acquisition policies that aim to increase equality in representation
  • plan special exhibitions to reflect audiences

Our dream is of a time when....

....every single person can walk into a public gallery and feel they belong.

....works by great artists that have been systematically excluded down the centuries, will finally be seen and celebrated.

....children going to our galleries get a healthier and more accurate message about their place in the world
