Tell the Cleveland Indians to Abandon their Offensive Logo
The Cleveland Indians are still using racist imagery to promote their team.
Fans of the team don't see anything wrong with the mascot, but "Chief Wahoo" does not belong in modern America. There are stereotypes upon stereotypes in the image: there is a bright red face, big nose, goofy grin, and even the name is offensive. This type of imagery being used as the main logo of a major league baseball team does nothing but breed insensitivity and misunderstanding about real American Indians.
This type of racism doesn't belong in baseball. Tell the Cleveland Indians to get rid of Chief Wahoo.
- Vice President, Public Relations, Cleveland Indians
Please remove Chief Wahoo from all Cleveland Indians uniforms and promotional materials. This image has been offensive since its inception, and it is a disgrace that a team with as strong a history as the Indians should retain such a logo into the 2011 season.
There are no benefits to keeping this image. It promotes a type of intolerance that is wholly unacceptable in American society, particularly in as family oriented of an event as baseball.
The Cleveland Indians organization needs to get out of the racist imagery of the 1950s and into the 21st Century.
