Community environment groups will be peacefully rallying against Labor’s poor environmental performance at their National Conference at the Brisbane Convention Centre this Saturday (8-10am) - meet at the corner of Glenelg and Merivale streets.

This conference is Labor’s highest decision-making forum and a huge opportunity to show delegates our strong opposition to the Toondah Harbour development, please join the Toondah and other environmental alliances if you can.

The Hon. Tanya Plibersek has been Minister for our Environment for almost 15 months. So far, she’s refused to share any update on her decision or even set a deadline for Walker to provide their EIS more than 8 months after we were given 6 weeks to lodge our submissions (see the Queensland Conservation Council’s ‘An Evening with the Minister’).

I called her office to express my disappointment with this and was shocked by how far the people have been shut out of this process. The Ministerial staffer who took my call said she was from the Department and couldn’t comment. When I called her electorate office they asked what did the Department say?

To make matters worse, state Labor under Palasczcuk are now championing the replacement of this home for 10 endangered species in a marine park with 3,600 homes for the mega rich as part of the solution to the housing crisis while there are people sleeping in tents and cars.

In other community action to save Toondah, it was amazing to join thousands of Toondah army recruits to March on Mother’s Day on 14 May. Thank you everyone. See great 7 News story and a speeded up video and rally footage

The amazing Flyways documentary featuring Toondah Harbour and the spectacular journeys of migratory shorebirds has been shown to thousands and is now available on ABC iview.

You can also add your voice to Birdlife’s petition to the Minister to save Toondah or send a message to the Premier who meets with Walker behind closed doors.

I also recommend reading the many insightful posts on the Save Straddie Facebook page highlighting the Toondah travesty.

Toondah also featured in the The Guardian with comments showing public outrage over the theft of this public land for private property interests.

Congratulations too to Toondah champion Chris Walker for his amazing photo of Toondah’s lone mangrove which now features on a UN poster.

Thank you as always for your passion and effort to save this special place and its Toondah treasures.
