Australia’s current environmental protection laws aren’t working.
For our voices to be heard so these laws are strengthened, we must have our say on a 12 month review of Australia’s Environment Protection & Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act 1999.
Currently, developers like Walker who want to build 3600 units in place of a koala colony & RAMSAR wetland, may be able to purchase ‘offsets’ overseas to proceed with their greed.
Figures from the Department of the Environment up to 30 June 2018 show that of the 96 projects that have been assessed by Environmental Impact Statement under the EPBC Act, only one has been refused approval. https://ab.co/2Ov1X7N
Research published in Conservation Science & Practice, shows 7.7 million ha of threatened species habitat has been destroyed in the 20 years since the Act came into force.
There are issues with compliance and enforcement, the slow process of updating the status of threatened species and developing or funding plans to bring them back from the brink of extinction. https://bit.ly/2SlrO36
Federal Environment Minister, Sussan Ley, says the review will ‘tackle green tape and deliver greater certainty’ to business, farmers and conservation groups. You can read her media releases at https://bit.ly/3bjmvtw
