The issue

On July 1, 2026, Sony committed to ending physical disc production for all PlayStation consoles in 2028. This means all games that will release from that point onward would be exclusively digital.

This means no more game ownership, as all digital games would be tied to your account and could be taken away at any moment. You would no longer have games as a separate product with its own value, which you could sell, share with a friend or keep forever.

It makes it so the only way to get these games is through PlayStation's digital storefront, which would go down in the future, making thousands of pieces of art completely inaccessible for the future generations. In fact, the necessity to connect to current day internet systems could mean all games including ones you have bought would be inaccessible in the future too.

It also takes out the soul of being a collector or an archivist, as you can no longer preserve or own your games on your shelf. Digital games are only a rental service, you do not own them, you are basically just bribing these companies into letting you use their games until they decide they don't want to let you anymore.

Sony has already started restructuring their factories to stop disc production for physical games. The sad reality is that there is likely no way to make them go back on this, and as great as it would be for them to change their mind, trying to convince them to is a lost cause.

This move is also very emblematic of the values of deception and anti-consumer practices Sony is embodying, and shows that even if they were to change their mind on this that they should not to be trusted or supported as a company any longer.

So we should shift the target of this petition. Instead of focusing on Sony to reverse this decision, we should target another company that could save physical games: Sega.

If Sega were to return with a new console, there would be no need for PlayStation to change their mind as we would be able to have physical games on that system. This is a perfect opportunity for Sega to make a return if they ever wanted to.

It would be a smart business decision, as Sega has several franchises that they could make exclusive, such as Sonic, Persona, Yakuza, Megami Tensei, Puyo Puyo, Super Monkey Ball, Phantasy Star, Virtua Fighter, and many more. And by supplying what everyone online has been praying for, there would surely be high sales. Judging by the general thoughts people have towards PlayStation right now, it seems very possible that Sega could beat them in the console war if they returned to compete against them and gave people what they have been asking for.

If there is high demand, there will be someone trying to meet that demand. So we need to let Sega know that there is high demand. Sign this petition to tell Sega that we would buy a new console from them with physical instead of the next PlayStation, and convince them to save physical games for the next generation.
