Tell Rep. Messmer: No 8th District resident should be sent to a foreign prison
The Issue
We, the people of Indiana’s 8th District, demand that Rep. Mark Messmer take an oath to ensure that no individual living in our communities will be sent to a foreign prison without a fair trial. The U.S. Constitution guarantees basic rights and protections for all people within our borders, including the right to dissent, free speech, and due process. Bloomberg found that 90 percent of the Venezuelan men the Trump administration sent to the CECOT mega-prison in El Salvador had no criminal records. Meanwhile, international students have been grabbed off the streets and jailed for participating in campus activism, and the Trump administration is openly exploring the legality of sending American citizens - the president calls them "homegrowns" - to CECOT, which functions more like a concentration camp than a prison. We cannot allow this to continue. We must stand united to protect our neighbors, regardless of nationality or immigration status. These actions not only violate human rights but also undermine the very principles enshrined in our Constitution. The use of foreign prisons — including sending people to countries where they may face torture or unlawful detention — is a direct threat to the protections meant to apply to everyone within our borders. Tell Rep. Messmer: We demand a commitment to the people of Indiana’s 8th District — no one will be disappeared, and no one will be sent away without a fair trial.
