Why this petition matters

We, the undersigned, are a group of concerned Davidson County residents, who wish to assert the following:
1) Davidson County Commissioners have unanimously approved support for the “Heartbeat Legislation,” or North Carolina House Bill 31,  allegedly with the support of their constituents;
2) At no time did the commissioners EVER hold any public hearing, ask for any public feedback or offer constituents any opportunity to voice their opinions on said proposed legislation;
3) At this time, the national Center for Disease Control (CDC) report that about 700 women die each year either during pregnancy, during delivery or soon afterward. Studies from numerous medical universities have determined that in states where abortion is banned, those deaths could increase by 20 % or more;
4) Those studies also show women of lower income and women of color will see even higher death rates;
5) While we vehemently support exceptions to abortion bans when we cannot forestall them, including rape, incest and danger to the life of the mother, research is showing that even with exceptions, tremendous barriers remain, including providers’ fear of retaliation, and we would hope for legislation guaranteeing protection for providers;
6) We respect that many issues play into a woman’s decision on whether or not to terminate a pregnancy, including faith and moral beliefs, and we believe EVERY woman should have the right to determine, according to her own beliefs and without government interference, the proper course for her own pregnancy;
7) Therefore we submit that, contrary to the representation by the commissioners, our community is one that supports CHOICE, giving each woman the right to determine whether or not to continue a pregnancy.
In conclusion, we wish to make it clear that Davidson County Commissioners do not represent their constituents as a whole in supporting HB31, and we the undersigned wish it to be known we support a woman’s CHOICE when it comes to her own pregnancy.
