The Issue

Publix has long claimed that shopping in its stores is “a pleasure.” But for many Floridians, that promise is now at risk.

In the wake of a controversial appeals court decision overturning Florida’s ban on open carry, Publix has announced it will now allow customers to openly carry firearms inside its stores across the state. This policy shift breaks with the company’s previous position, where it “respectfully requested that only law enforcement officials openly carry firearms in our stores.” That was a reasonable stance—one that prioritized the comfort and safety of all customers.

Now, shoppers may be forced to walk down aisles beside strangers openly carrying pistols or rifles, not knowing whether they’re trained, stable, or even legally allowed to possess those weapons. For families, children, and survivors of gun violence, this change isn't just alarming—it can be deeply traumatic.

Other grocery chains like Winn-Dixie are choosing a different path. They’re continuing to ban open carry in their Florida stores, demonstrating that businesses can both follow state law and make their own choices to protect public safety. Publix, a private company, has that same right—and responsibility.

This isn’t a political issue. It’s a question of whether our grocery stores remain places of safety, not danger.

We call on Publix CEO Kevin Murphy and the Board of Directors to reverse this dangerous decision and reinstate a ban on open carry inside all Florida stores. Respect your customers. Respect your employees. Put public safety first.
