Spa Sky, located on the 4th floor of 1215 Connecticut Avenue NW in Washington D.C., is an Asian massage parlor that has recently been discovered to be a front for an illegal brothel . The property that Spa Sky is operated from is owned by 3101 Rhode Island Avenue L.L.C., a company owned by local businessman, Jerry Schaeffer. According to court documents, Mr. Schaeffer did not respond to a notice from the DC Office of the Attorney General informing him that his property is being operated as a brothel and has not taken any steps to stop Spa Sky from operating. We are now calling on Mr. Schaeffer to take immediate action to end Spa Sky's operations on his property. By not ending these operations he will have profited indirectly from criminal activity and potentially from human trafficking.
Asian Massage parlors have been frequently linked to human trafficking networks. Women found in massage parlors acting as fronts for brothels typically live on-site where they may be confined and coerced into providing commercial sex to six to ten men a day, 7 days a week. Most of the women trafficked into the parlors are not U.S. citizens, and many do not have documented status. These women are particularly vulnerable because human traffickers are able to threaten them with deportation if they don’t comply with their orders. Without legal status, the women frequently fear and distrust police or government authorities. Immigrant women are also vulnerable due to language barriers, unfamiliarity with their legal rights in the US, and/or the lack of a local support network.
Please take a moment to sign on to the letter below to let Mr. Schaeffer know that the community will not stand for landlords who do not prevent potential or actual sex trafficking from occurring on their premises.
