The Issue

PETA recently called attention to an unsettling detail in Mario Kart World—the character Cow’s brass nose ring. While it may seem like just a quirky accessory in a fantasy racing game, it’s actually a painful symbol rooted in real-world cruelty.

In the meat and dairy industries, nose rings are used to control and manipulate animals. Workers pierce them through the sensitive septum of cows and bulls—often attaching chains or spikes—to force obedience or even stop calves from nursing. These are not aesthetic choices. They’re tools of pain, dominance, and suffering.

No animal would be happy wearing one of these in real life. And that’s exactly why this matters.

PETA’s call to action has already sparked a vital conversation, and we’re standing with them to ask Nintendo to take one simple but meaningful step: remove Cow’s nose ring. It’s a small design change that would show massive compassion.

Mario Kart has always been a place for fun, imagination, and joy. Including a detail tied to real-world violence—however unintentionally—contradicts the spirit of the game and sends the wrong message to players, especially younger ones. Why risk normalizing cruelty when the fix is so easy?

Nintendo has a powerful opportunity here. By removing Cow's ring, the company can demonstrate that empathy has a place in every world—real or digital.

Join us in urging Nintendo to remove the nose ring from Cow and help make Mario Kart World a kinder place to play.
