I volunteer at Quince Orchard Library, and I am shocked by how many books in good condition are being recycled weekly by library staff. I asked the librarian about this, and all she said was that the books that are recycled are the ones that are not in good enough condition to sell. I checked the recycle bins outside the library (photos below) and the majority of the books there were in good condition and had all pages intact. At most, a few of the pages were torn or the spine was chipped, but in that case the library could have used tape to repair the pages and then donated the book to organizations that distribute them to children in need of them. Throwing away books just because they can't be sold is a bad practice since it is environmentally wasteful. Instead of throwing away books that are removed from library shelves, the library could donate them to organizations like Better World Books and place them in Free Little Libraries around the County to help foster a love for reading in children.

Book lovers, avid readers, and those who rely on the library system for affordable access to a diverse range of reading materials are directly affected. Additionally, individuals and organizations seeking opportunities to receive these books for educational, cultural, or charitable purposes are also impacted by this practice.

By discarding books in good condition instead of exploring alternative solutions, we risk squandering valuable opportunities. Each discarded book represents a lost chance to inspire, educate, and entertain. Such actions deprive readers, particularly those facing financial constraints, of the ability to explore new stories, broaden their horizons, and cultivate a love for reading. Furthermore, these books could be repurposed to support educational initiatives, community programs, and the joy of reading for individuals who lack easy access to books.

Immediate action is of utmost importance in addressing the issue of discarding usable books within MCPL. In a time when environmental concerns and sustainable practices are increasingly important, it is essential that we champion reuse and minimize unnecessary waste. By adopting alternative disposal methods, such as establishing partnerships with organizations that donate books that would otherwise end up in landfills to those in need like Better World Books or implementing book sharing programs like Little Free Libraries in libraries throughout the county, MCPL can demonstrate its commitment to the community, support literacy, and foster a culture of sharing knowledge and resources. Together, we can ensure that no book goes to waste and guarantee equitable access to the joy of reading for all members of our community.
