Tell McMaster's SWC's to Cancel its Islamophobic 'Queer and Trans Iftar'

The Issue

On March 30, 2023, McMaster University's Student Wellness Centre posted on their social media to advertise for a gathering on April 11. In this holy, sacred month of Ramadan when Muslims strive to enhance their faith and nurture their souls, McMaster's SWC decided to host an 'iftar' for a night of 'queerness'.

The ideas pushed by McMaster's SWC are strictly against the core tenets of Islam, and to create such an event which attempts to normalize such major sins for Muslims is a vicious attack on the Islamic identity of Muslims on campus and beyond.

In a month of worship, prayer, repentance, for McMaster's SWC to promote the open celebration and acceptance of such a major sin in Islam is a gross infringement on the Muslim faith. Such events not only promote misinformation, misrepresentation and misguidance, but also threatens the religious safe space on campus where Muslims can freely practise what they believe.

As we respect the rights and liberties of all Canadians to live as they please, we also ask McMaster's SWC to respect our Muslim identity and beliefs, and our choice to live as God pleases.

We respectfully request McMaster's SWC not to force an anti-Islamic agenda on Muslims on campus. We respectfully demand the cancellation of the event, and a comprehensive evaluation and explanation of the objectives of such an event. We also demand an apology for this gross infringement of our beliefs and our Islamic identity in this holy month of Ramadan.
