On Monday, Governor Landry signed his first executive order - to veto the EXCELL Appeals Process.
Within hours of taking office, Governor Landry acted at the command of powerful special interest groups, and in opposition to the teachers, families, and students who had successfully advocated for this policy.
Landry overturned a policy that allowed workforce-ready students to graduate in December. Through the EXCELL Appeals Process, these Louisiana youth can now enroll in post-secondary education and engage in employment opportunities. The December graduates were able to succeed because they were given an alternative way to display their knowledge - something that every other state in our country offers.
Because of the veto, the Class of 2024 cannot use the EXCELL Appeals Process.
Current seniors may be denied their diplomas in May because their right to show their competency outside of a single assessment has been taken away.
We need your help to fight for these students' opportunity to graduate:
Share the Petition: the magic here is getting zip codes represented for every legislator's district!
Tell Louisiana's Legislators: we must move our schools from TEST preparation to LIFE preparation by making the EXCELL Appeals Process a law.
Share Your Story: we NEED to share stories of students who will be denied graduation due to the LEAP exam.
Tell the Public - use the form to tell us why your child/student is more than just a test score.
Share the News: we are a teacher-led and student-centered movement. Keep Connected with us and fuel the fight with people power through our Facebook and Instagram.
We can't allow those in power to use our children as political pawns.
We - educators, parents, and students - refuse to be ignored.
We will continue to fight for the future of Louisiana's children.
