Every year, thousands of roosters are loaded onto Korean Air flights — not as pets, not as livestock — but as weapons. These birds are bred, conditioned, and smuggled to cockfighting arenas where they are forced to fight until they die. U.S. law has banned the air transport of fighting animals since 2007. Korean Air knows this. And for a while, it seemed like they were going to do the right thing.

After an investigation exposed the airline's role in this trade, Korean Air promised to stop shipping live roosters from the U.S. to the Philippines. But cockfighters simply rerouted. Now the birds fly through Vietnam instead — and Korean Air is still cashing in, charging up to $180 per rooster for birds that will sell for $2,000 in illegal fighting arenas.

A loophole in a flight path doesn't change what's happening to these animals. Cockfighting is one of the cruelest forms of animal abuse, and Korean Air is its getaway car. The airline has the power to end this — right now — by banning all live gamefowl shipments, no matter the destination.
