Tell Hyatt: Stop the API Conference! No Hosting Fossil Fuel Criminals in Chicago!

The Issue

What’s Happening?

The Hyatt Regency McCormick Place in Chicago is hosting a conference of the notorious American Petroleum Institute (API) taking place from November 13-17, 2023.

API is a lobbying organization that plays a crucial role in maintaining profits for and preventing the regulation of oil companies most culpable for the global climate crisis including BP, Shell, and Exxon Mobil.

This summer all Chicagoans experienced gray summer days choking on wildfire smoke and many of our neighbors faced devastating flooding damage caused by increasingly extreme weather patterns. The time is now to demand climate justice for Chicago and all frontline communities already facing the most dire impacts of climate change.

Our Demands:

  • Tell Hyatt to cancel API’s Chicago conference - No more support for fossil fuel criminals.
  • Tell Big Oil and Gas to stop new drilling and the building of pipelines.
  • Make Big Oil pay for the damage they have caused and fund a just transition to a clean energy future.
  • Green jobs, social housing, better public transit, and green schools for all.

API - A Criminal Syndicate Polluting Chicago and the World

If we don’t stop them, the API and its 600 fossil fuel companies will continue dumping millions into stopping the transition to a clean energy future while working to win new drilling and pipeline projects that could lock in catastrophic warming for generations.

From dirty industry and diesel trucks to the toxic BP refinery just outside Chicago, everyday Chicagoans, especially Black and brown Environmental Justice communities, are feeling the brunt of API’s work to block a clean energy transition that would benefit us all. If API continues their business as usual we will all have more summers of extreme heat, wildfire smoke, and flooding to endure.

Spreading Lies & Blocking Positive Change

The API and its members are responsible for decades of misinformation campaigns about climate change and they continue to fight efforts to win reforms like the Green New Deal which would create a jobs and healthcare guarantee and build affordable green housing, public transportation, and power for all.

Causing Extreme Weather, Forced Migration and Anti-Immigrant Backlash

The API and its member companies in the oil and gas industry are destabilizing our communities and our hemisphere from Venezuela and Puerto Rico to Texas and Chicago, causing natural disasters and political disasters alike. Just last year they gave over $12 million in campaign contributions to immigrant hating Texas Governor, Greg Abbott as he sets deadly traps for migrants in the Rio Grande and busses them around the country. The API also supports prominent Republicans that have supported crippling sanctions on Venezuela, collapsing its already troubled economy. After a year of humanitarian crises including extreme heat, wildfire smoke, hurricanes, floods and droughts, it’s time to say enough is enough! Stop the API!

Sign the petition.

Then call +1 312 567 1234, and ask to speak to a manager and demand that the Hyatt cancel the conference for their American Petroleum Institute November 13-17, 2023.
