GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain went on ABC's "The View" recently and told the audience that being gay is a choice, recycling an outdated lie that's been debunked over and over again by leading medical organizations.
"You show me the science that says that it's not," Mr. Cain demanded, saying that he "could be persuaded" and that it's all "just a difference of opinion."
Well, Mr. Cain, you might just be in luck. Dr. Jack Drescher, a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and an expert on the subject, has offered to meet with Mr. Cain to show him hard evidence that being gay isn't a choice – a dangerous lie that gives undue credence to harmful practices like reparative therapy.
And now, he is saying he would support an amendment to the Constitution that would make it impossible for committed, loving same-sex couples to marry – and receive all the benefits that come with it.
Will you send a letter to Herman Cain now calling on him to meet with Dr. Drescher right away and retract his dangerous statement? If he wants proof, we'll give him proof!
- Herman Cain
I was shocked to learn that you recently called being gay a choice. I would not have expected a candidate for President of the United States to express views that were so unfounded and out of step with mainstream America.
Your outdated claims give unfortunate credence to the idea that someone's homosexuality can be changed or even 'cured.' Leading medical organizations -- including the American Psychological Association, the American Medical Association, the American Counseling Association and the American Psychiatric Association all agree -- 'conversion' or 'reparative' therapy is dangerous. Side effects include depression, anxiety and self-destructive behavior.
I understand that Dr. Jack Drescher of the American Psychiatric Association has offered to meet with you to explain the science, but that you've refused his invitation.
I encourage you to reconsider Dr. Drescher's invitation and show that you are a leader for all Americans by retracting your dangerous remarks. If you familiarize yourself with leading research you'll see that it's clear -- you can't change the way someone is born.
