Save the Settlers Park Trees in Hanover
Feb 17, 2017
Per the 2/21/17 Hanover City Council Agenda, here's what has been posted on the City's website...
Item #7. Settlers Park Ball field Redesign Project Review. This is a follow up discussion to address where the project stands.
What's left to discuss?????
The vote by members of the City Council at the last meeting, failed to APPROVE ACCEPTANCE of the donation from the Hanover Athletic Association for the funding of the ball field renovation project. Those of us that are opponents of the project are in agreement that NO MONEY = NO PROJECT, am I right? What Mayor Kauffman fails to come to grips with is that the community as a whole does not support this project, and it will not cost the City of Hanover a cent if they just LEAVE THE 2 BALL FIELDS FOR THE CHILDREN AND THE TREES IN SETTLER'S PARK ALONE, contrary to the statements he made at the last City Council meeting.
The Wright County Journal Press/Drummer posted a fairly accurate description of the events that took place at the City Council meeting on 2/7/17. We clapped and cheered when it was announced that the funding resolution didn't have enough votes to pass but I assure you, it was not to gloat. It was a release of pent up frustration, by those of us who have been engaged in an up hill battle against the powers-that-be, that this horrific. poorly thought out, poorly planned project was nothing more than a smokescreen by the Hanover Athletic Association to build an adult softball field in place of the 2 fields that already serve the baseball and softball needs of the children of Hanover.
The Mayor claims we've been instigators of obstructionism. If you folks think we're been obstructionists and posting "alternative facts" then ask a Hanover Athletic Association member this, "Why did your organization choose to withdraw your application to the Minnesota Gambling Control Board for funding AND why did you seek to terminate the 50 year lease agreement with the city after only 1 month?"
A quote by former Hanover city council member John Vajda is mentioned in the article by the Wright Journal Press article, who stated, "It's not over." During the September 2016 Hanover City Council meeting, I took exception to John's inflammatory and taunting suggestion that any proceeds from cutting down the historic bur oak trees should be spent on the ball fields. To that I can only reply, maybe the rejected $50,000 donation from the Hanover Athletic Association could be spent on the Hanover Historical Society's Settler's Park Veteran's Grove proposal instead.
I will be at the meeting next Tuesday and report back on further developments.
