Tell Hanover to SAVE our 150 year old Oak trees at Settler's Park before it's too late!
History gives heart to a community. Imagine Hanover without the Historic Bridge, without the River Inn, without Settler’s Park. Now imagine Settler’s Park without the 150-year-old Oak Grove that shades the park shelter and playground. Unless we take action now, you won’t have to imagine the park without the grand oaks you'll be able to experience it all in its hot, barren glory.
We, the citizens of the City of Hanover, Minnesota and the surrounding communities, petition the City Council to NOT remove any of the heritage oak trees located near the shelter at Settler’s Park (near City Hall).
The City Council has voted to remove 5 of the Burr Oak trees near the shelter at Settler’s Park to allow the Hanover Athletic Association to expand one of the baseball fields from a practice field to a tournament field. In fact, from a recent Park Board survey published this spring, over 70% of the 230 Hanover residents that responded thought the current baseball fields at Settler's Park met community needs. The removal of these 5 trees will greatly impact (and possibly destroy) the remaining 7 Oak trees due to root disturbance and other changes in soil and water flow. The shade these beautiful trees currently provide will be missed by many who visit the park for picnics, potlucks or a game of tag or hide-and-go-seek among children.
We would like to propose that the City Council take a broader view and consider a different location for a recreational area that would provide amenities for baseball, softball, soccer, lacrosse, tennis and other sports related uses. Expanding one playing field (at the expense of 150-year-old-trees) is a very shortsighted fix that benefits just a small portion of our community. The money that is earmarked to create this expanded field and remove huge trees could be applied to a recreational area that benefits the entire community.
