Tell FIU to Cancel Its Upcoming Pig Roast!

Tell FIU to Cancel Its Upcoming Pig Roast!
The Issue
Please tell Florida International University that killing pigs for entertainment is wrong!
On September 13th, 2025 FIU plans to kick off its Pig Roast Series, where FIU football fans will gather to roast pigs in "celebration" of their first home game of the season. If successful, the school plans to make the Pig Roast an annual tradition!
Not only does this event celebrate cruelty to pigs, but in a world increasingly concerned with sustainability and environmental impact, it feels incredibly insensitive, irresponsible and sends the wrong message to FIU's students and alumni.
Here's why:
- It Opposes FIU's Own Sustainability Values
Leading environmental organizations, including the United Nations' FAO, the World Wildlife Fund, Nature Conservancy and Sierra Club, have warned that global meat production - especially beef and pork - is not sustainable, and that the meat industry is responsible for significant greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, water pollution and habitat destruction.
The planned Pig Roast Series encourages overconsumption of pig meat, which completely contradicts FIU's stated commitments to practice good environmental stewardship and reduce the school's negative environmental impacts.
2. It's Cruel to Pigs
Promoting the killing and roasting pigs for a football game sends a dangerous message that inflicting harm on animals for entertainment is acceptable and enjoyable.
According to Emory University, pigs are behaviorally, cognitively and emotionally complex individuals with intelligence comparable to dogs and cats.
As an institution that prides itself on progress, integrity, and innovation, FIU should recognize the considerable evidence that pigs are highly sensitive animals and end its support for activities like pig roasting.
Culture is not an excuse for cruelty, and there are many other ways to facilitate a fun and festive sports gathering without harming animals.
I am an FIU graduate who is proud of the education I received there. FIU is supposed to a beacon of progress in South Florida, and encourage forward-thinking ideals among its students.
Please ask FIU to uphold its progressive values and change the Pig Roast to a more humane, environmentally-responsible event.
Thank you!
