The Issue

The newly opened Family Farm & Home store in Unity Plaza (Latrobe) is already making plans to let a worker breed and sell rabbits directly out of the store. We need to stop this before the first litter arrives.

Rabbits are the third most abandoned animals in the United States. Right here in Westmoreland County and surrounding counties, our local rabbit rescues are completely full. Every single week, domestic rabbits are found dumped in local parks, left in cardboard boxes, or surrendered because buyers weren't educated on the 10+ year commitment and high veterinary costs of caring for them.

Allowing a brand-new commercial store to act as an unregulated backyard breeding market will directly flood our community with more unwanted rabbits, placing an unbearable burden on local, donor-funded rescues.

Furthermore, Pennsylvania State Law (Title 18 § 5547) strictly bans the sale of rabbits under 8 weeks old. Selling live animals as retail impulse buys is an outdated, irresponsible practice that contradicts the community-first values Family Farm & Home claims to stand for.

We, the undersigned residents of Latrobe, Unity Township, and Westmoreland County, demand that Family Farm & Home leadership put an immediate stop to all rabbit sales now and in the future at the Latrobe store.

We urge them to partner with local rescues for adoption events instead of profit-driven breeding.

Please sign and share to protect local animals and tell corporate retail that Westmoreland County chooses adoption over backyard breeding!
