On September 20th, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot and critically wounded Wilber Rafael Garcés Perez, a 28-year-old asylum seeker, in Austin, TX, while he was making a delivery for DoorDash.

This nearly-fatal incident highlights the extreme vulnerabilities that immigrant gig workers, like Wilber, face on the job.

According to data from the Pew Research Center and McKinsey, as many as 45% of gig-economy workers are immigrants, many of whom work to support their families. 

DoorDash drivers already lack basic worker protections on the job because they're classified as independent contractors, and now they risk potentially fatal interactions with ICE agents while making deliveries. 

Knowing this, DoorDash must establish a Dedicated Immigrant & Gig Worker Legal Defense Fund and provide Dashers with instant access to free or low-cost legal assistance if they’re unlawfully detained or experience ICE enforcement actions while actively performing deliveries.
