Since our campaign secured a motion by Derby City Council to adopt the Socio-Economic Duty in 2022, we have been keeping up the momentum to call for meaningful implementation. Though the Council has included the Duty in its Equality Impact Assessment template for policies, a Cost of Living Strategy and as a heading on reports to the Councillors' Meetings, there are still many policies and services that are causing harm and worsening financial struggles in our city.
The #FairChanceDerby campaign has enabled local people affected by the cost of living crisis, including people who have not participated in local democracy before, to ask public questions of the Council. Questions have addressed issues like child poverty, lack of dentists, the high number of betting shops targeting deprived areas and calling on the Council to send debt relief instead of bailiffs to struggling households with Council Tax arrears.
Creative approaches have been adopted to engage the public and local politicians including via chalking for change, pop-up street stalls, poetry and now craftivism via #dolls4change
Dolls representing local citizens and their cost of living crisis concerns will march outside the Council House from 1-2pm on Monday 24th June and all supporters are welcome to join in this creative lunchtime action for change.
There is a doll-making session before the protest from 10am-1pm at QUAD- click here for details.
