CITY PARK FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS

TAKE A MINUTE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO THE CITY PARK COMMUNITY Background: City Park Golf Course is just one part of Denver that would be adversely impacted by Mayor Hancock's plan to install the wasteful, Platte to Park Hill (P2P) drainage system. Perhaps even of more concern is Denver's plan to dig up un-remediated (unclean), parts of the I 70/Vazquez Superfund site in Cole and Globeville neighborhoods to install parts of P2P. Cole and Globeville are in an area designated as a Superfund site because it is listed by the federal government as one of the most polluted sites in the country. http://tinyurl.com/h8nr2vf The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is supposed to make sure that residents of neighborhoods potentially affected by pollution in Superfund sites, are contacted, educated about Superfund health risks and invited to have a two way dialogue about plans for work at the site. This process, called the Community Involvement Plan, was mandated by Congress in the CERCLA (Superfund) laws. http://tinyurl.com/zn5vh9k In the case of the P2P, EPA may have dropped the ball. Region 8 EPA, delegated to Denver, all responsibility for developing and executing a CIP for P2P. Denver did hold a series of tightly managed meetings but attendees don't remember hearing about the Superfund health and safety risks nor were they given lists of potential contaminants. Many residents of these neighborhood say that they were never contacted or given word about the worrisome Superfund activity planned by Denver, near their homes. WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP: Ask the EPA to delay work in Globeville and Cole SUPERFUND SITES until the EPA has had time to develop and execute a credible CIP that reaches out to all residents many of whom are low wage earner working long hours and others who do not speak English as their first language . The federal decision to give the go ahead , or not, to the proposed I 7-0 expansion, has been delayed until winter 2017. P2P is tied to the I 70 project so there is no rush to start P2P. http://tinyurl.com/zo6jh7w PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT: Please consider copying and pasting the following suggested letter to the EPA asking them to delay the start of work on the P2P until they are sure that he health and safety of residents is protected.
