The Issue

Stop H.R. 4255 - Protect Mexican Gray Wolves 🐺

Congress is considering H.R. 4255, a bill that would strip Mexican gray wolves of protections under the Endangered Species Act. This move ignores science, threatens cultural heritage, and puts one of North America’s most endangered animals at risk.

Mexican gray wolves were once nearly wiped out. Thanks to ESA protections, their population has slowly recovered - but they are still far from safe. There are fewer than 300 wolves in the wild across Arizona and New Mexico. Removing protections now could undo decades of conservation progress.

The Facts:
- Mexican gray wolves play a critical role in keeping ecosystems healthy as a native apex predator.
- They are part of the cultural and ecological heritage of the Southwest, deeply connected to Indigenous history and the region’s wild landscapes.
- Claims that wolves devastate livestock are greatly exaggerated.

Wolves are responsible for less than 1% of livestock deaths overall.
In recovery areas, wolf-related cattle losses are estimated at around 0.1%.
Most livestock deaths are caused by weather, illness, birthing complications, domestic dogs, and other predators - not wolves.
H.R. 4255 would open the door to increased killing of Mexican gray wolves before they’ve truly recovered, threatening their survival and weakening science-based wildlife management.

We call on Congress to:
✔ Reject H.R. 4255
✔ Keep Mexican gray wolves protected under the Endangered Species Act
✔ Support coexistence solutions that work for ranchers, wildlife, and ecosystems

Mexican gray wolves belong in the wild - not on the brink of extinction again.

Sign this petition to protect science, heritage, and one of America’s most endangered species.
