Ban forced arbitration and restore consumer, worker rights

Ban forced arbitration and restore consumer, worker rights

The Issue

The New York Times’ recent hard-hitting series shows how corporations use the fine print of contracts to eliminate their customers’ and workers’ right to sue in court when harmed.

The companies use their one-sided contracts to require consumers and workers to resolve disputes in private forced arbitration instead of in open court. That’s right. If we are injured by corporate rip-offs or misconduct, we cannot go to court if their fine-print terms include a forced arbitration clause.

The in-depth NYT investigation describes how corporate executives got together to promote and spread this stealth attack on our legal rights, including adding a further restriction to prohibit us from joining together in class actions.

So now millions of us must surrender our right to go to court in order to get a job, take out a loan, and even to be admitted into a nursing home.

It’s time for Congress to put end to the corporate practice of forced arbitration. Corporations must stop stripping people of their legal rights once and for all.
