I wrote about this a few days ago but evidently the way Change.org displayed the link was confusing (thanks everyone for the feedback), so re-upping this as the NRA is about to start its convention in Dallas tomorrow. Continuing in the #NRAboycott tradition of looking at the financial underpinnings of the NRA's power, I've started a petition on WhiteHouse.gov to ask that the IRS audit the non-profit status of the NRA and its lobbying arm the NRA-ILA. Please take a moment to sign it here: https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/audit-nra-and-nra-ilas-tax-exempt-statuses The National Rifle Association is a 501c(3) tax exempt organization, which means it must not be operated for the benefit of private interests, and must not attempt to influence legislation or campaign against political candidates. However, many of the NRA’s activities promote the interests of specific private entities (the manufacturers of guns and ammunition), and try to convince people to take action for and against specific legislation and candidates. Similarly, the National Rifle Association’s Institute for Legislative Action is registered as a 501c(4), and as such it must be operated exclusively to promote social welfare. It has been doing no such thing. You can read more about why the NRA and NRA-ILA being classified as non-profits is problematic here, in a very in-depth article: https://www.csgv.org/nra-tax-exempt-loaded-private-interest/ This Medium article is also a good read on the subject: https://medium.com/@SIIPCampaigns/did-the-nras-dana-loesch-just-admit-to-tax-fraud-cc8c6e1c86fd The petition I set up requests that the IRS audit and investigate the NRA and NRA-IL, and determine whether their 501c(3) and 501c(4) statuses are appropriate. Here's the link again, please sign it! https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/audit-nra-and-nra-ilas-tax-exempt-statuses If just over half of the people receiving this email sign the petition, we'll have enough signatures to force the White House to respond. Also, you can go directly to the IRS's site and fill out this complaint form (If you can sign the White House petition and fill out one of these forms too, that would be really great!) https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f13909.pdf If you really want to go to town, you can fill out the form three times, once for the NRA, once for the NRA-ILA, and once for the NRA Foundation.
