The Issue

I remember the day I first heard about Community Consolidated School District 93's new boundary proposal. It felt like a punch to the gut as I realized that the voices of our community were being overshadowed by decisions made behind closed doors. The board appears ready to decide on a plan that may not necessarily reflect what’s best for our community. This decision is being rushed without understanding the complete impact, and that is deeply concerning.

  • IMPACT ON STUDENTS- Concept 2 will impact a greater number of students (over 100) and will uproot students from their community.   Not enough consideration has been given by the district as to the impact this will have on students.
  • CLASS SIZES - Class sizes will largely increase and will impact all students.  If concept 2 is chosen, Heritage Lakes class sizes will reach the max number in the guide that the district offers.  This will impact all classes and all students!
  • TRANSPORTATION - An analysis of how this will impact costs for transportation has NOT been done fully.
  • PROPERTY VALUES - Taxpayers are worried about how this will impact their home values. By changing the schools an area feeds into, it can impact interest from prospective homebuyers.
  • OTHER COST-CUTTING MOVES - What else has the board looked at to cut costs? Closing a school should be a LAST resort.

It’s not just about shifting lines on a map – it's about the impact on the students whose lives hang in the balance of these changes. The proposed boundary changes threaten to uproot established school friendships, increase travel times for our children, and potentially overcrowd certain schools while under-utilizing others. These are not just numbers; these are real children and real families who could be seriously affected.

According to a study by the National Bureau of Economic Research, such sudden changes in school boundaries can lead to adverse impacts on students' academic performance and social well-being. Additionally, the National Education Association strongly emphasizes the need for community involvement in such impactful decisions to ensure equitable education for all students.

Our community's identity is intertwined with the schools and the friendships they nurture. Close-knit communities with collaborative decision-making processes have been shown to foster better academic and social environments for children, as identified in a study published by the American Educational Research Association.

The board's leaning towards this boundary change without adequate community consultation disregards these crucial aspects. Our children deserve better than being shuffled around like pieces on a chessboard to suit personal agendas.

Let us raise our voices and insist that the CCSD 93 Board truly listens to us. The community should have a significant say in any decision that so deeply impacts our children’s education and future. Sign this petition to demand transparency, community involvement, and ultimately, the rejection of this boundary option proposed by CCSD 93. Together, we can ensure our children’s best interests remain at the forefront of any school district decision-making process. Please sign the petition today.
