Tell Carly Fiorina To Be Honest About Global Warming
The Issue
There aren't many coal mines in California. Nor is there much reliance on coal-fired electricity to speak of. So why, then, has the Appalachian coal industry poured $63,000 so far into the campaign coffers of California Senate candidate Carly Fiorina, according to the investigative reporters at California Watch?
Maybe because Fiorina has put herself firmly in the climate denier camp, equating global warming to weather and dismissing the national security concerns it poses. Or maybe because she is running against one of the left's strongest environmental advocates, Sen. Barbara Boxer (D.), chair of the Environment and Public Works Committee. Or maybe because Fiorina also supports California's Proposition 23, an oil-funded ballot initiative to shoot down the state's own progressive climate law this November.
While politically convenient, Fiorina is toeing a very fine line, since she wants to represent a progressive state that is set to be particularly devastated by warming impacts, such as drought, sea-level rise, and more devastating forest fires.
In soliciting and accepting donations from coal bosses, such as Ohio's Murray Energy CEO, Fiorina is happily pandering to the 'do-nothing' crowd. But Fiorina is no a natural born climate-killer. As an adviser to John McCain, she actually supported cap-and-trade legislation.
Fiorina is free to flip-flop wherever she wants and to accept any campaign contributions within legal bounds. But like her Big Coal-backers, she is cynically playing loose with the facts about climate science and climate security against what is clearly her better judgment.
What's worse, as voters in her state go to the ballots to vote on the fate of a landmark climate law, Fiorina's misleading campaign statements could do real damage, regardless of whether she wins.
Just because Fiorina is accepting out-of-state coal money, doesn't mean she should represent their interests. Sign this petition to tell Carly Fiorina to stop misreprenting the reality of global warming and undermining California's landmark climate law.
