The basic principle driving behind the Internet is that it should be a free and open platform, almost like any other utility we use in our home (like electricity). Users should be able to use their bandwidth however they want (as long as it's legal), and internet service providers should not be able to provide priority service to any corner of the internet. ISPs should not be able to limit the usage of Internet in any way. This term is also known as "Net Neutrality". But today I saw in the News that Bharti Airtel wants to charge extra for VOIP data, even if the customer is already paying for data usage. Which means that if a user has certain amount of data left in his account, he still would need to shell out extra to use services like Skype, Viber, Hangouts, Line & other services that use Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP). This is really a dangerous proposition, once they implement this plan, their next move would be to charge extra for streaming from services like YouTube, Saavan, iTunes, Gaana etc. Next they will target messengers like Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger, WeChat, etc... This move will really mess up the Internet of this country. A customer is already paying heavy data charges this will only increase their monthly bills. Boycotting Airtel won't help, because other Telecom companies will jump onto this bandwagon if this crony scheme is allowed to be implemented. The President of United Sates Mr. Obama has also recognized the need for Net Neutrality and has agreed to let Internet remain free and open for all. Therefore I request TRAI & Honorable Minister of Communications to block Bharti Airtel from implementing this scheme. I also request that new Laws should be formulated that protect The Net Neutrality of India in future. It is quite surprising that India in this digital age still does not have laws to protect the basic Internet freedom. Thanks
