Please sign this petition to Tegna, Inc. to show your interest in keeping the “Move Closer to Your World” theme music on WNEP once Tegna acquires the station.

WNEP has used the Move Closer theme since the 1970s, and in itself, has become an established staple of everyday culture in NEPA. The Move Closer theme is a part of what defines NEPA, and we do not want to see it go amidst this corporate merger!

Tegna has deployed a standard “news intro” used across all of the stations owned by the company, and we do not want to see Move Closer killed off in favor of this standard corporate intro. This is OUR culture in NEPA, and we would like to embrace it for decades longer.

Things change with time, and thus, a modern “news intro” can be adapted to use the “Move Closer to Your World” theme music. Move Closer not only is just another news theme; it’s familiar to us, it’s part of our culture and upbringing here in NEPA.

To this day, only two stations currently use the theme: WPVI-6 in Philadelphia, and WNEP-16.

In the 1990s, a similar situation we face today happened in Philadelphia when WPVI’s parent company was purchased by Disney. The Move Closer theme was subsequently changed, but not for long. Philly spoke up: they told the station they preferred the classic Move Closer to Your World news theme, and within three days, the classic theme was restored.

Part of what makes WNEP and WPVI the top-rated station in their markets is the energy generated for the newscast by the news theme that is played before every newscast.
