Demand a Real Debate
This petition had 394 supporters
The Oregonian is hosting a Mayoral Debate on February 29th but with only a fraction of the Mayoral candidates who have expressed serious intent to run for this office. Instead, the Oregonian has only invited Ted Wheeler and Jules Bailey to participate, ordained the “front runners” not by polls but by the media groups who refuse to give any other candidates airtime or serious consideration.
Who gave the Oregonian the right to decide whose voices Portlanders get to hear? We the signers of this petition call on Ted Wheeler and Jules Bailey to demand an inclusive debate that gives time and space for all serious candidates.
The Oregonian is not a kingmaker. The citizens of Portland want to see a competitive race based on creative and bold ideas that come from the people living in Portland, not just those observing it from elected office. Narrowing down the race to two candidates based on nothing beyond fundraising and currently holding office does not show respect to Portlanders for the progressivism and intellect that they are well known for. Let Portlanders hear the candidates platforms, we are more than capable of doing the king making by virtue of the power of democracy. The candidates themselves have called for a more inclusive fora.
Sign this petition to demand Wheeler and Bailey to withdraw from this debate unless and until the Oregonian invites all serious candidates on stage.
