Housing for the sick and homeless

The Issue

Although Canada is one of the richest countries in the world, youth and adult homelessness is a serious and a big problem! Everyday we walk by them and pretend that is the norm but everyone deserves to have a roof over their heads, a warm bed and a plate of hot food. Those are things that so many of us take for granted so please help and sign the petition to show your support! Help be apart of change.

Responded
Dear Ms. Carroca: Thank you for expressing your concern for our fellow Ontarians who are sick and homeless. Your online petition has been brought to my attention and I agree that there is an important role for government to play in helping address this issue. I would like to take this opportunity to highlight some of the work being done to end homelessness in Ontario. In January 2015, Ontario established an Expert Advisory Panel on Homelessness to provide advice on how to achieve the goal of ending homelessness under the province's Poverty Reduction Strategy. The Panel's report, A Place to Call Home (http://www.mah.gov.on.ca/AssetFactory.aspx?did=11038) was released on October 28, 2015, and acknowledges that homelessness is complex, and that progressive action is required to address it. Based on the advice of the panel, our government is committed to ending chronic homelessness in 10 years. In addition, the government has committed to a number of immediate and long-term actions to help people now, as well as gather the data needed to measure the effectiveness of our work and make meaningful progress on preventing, reducing and ending homelessness over time. (http://www.mah.gov.on.ca/Page126.aspx) Having a safe and stable home with the right services and supports is an important first step to moving out of poverty and engaging in the community. With the right information and the right tools, we will be better positioned to reach our goal. We recognize that we can’t do it alone. To successfully end homelessness, everyone has a role to play – the federal government, provincial ministries, municipal partners, community agencies and the private sector. I look forward to working with the new federal government to reach our vision of ending homelessness. Once again, thank you for bringing your concerns to my attention. Best regards, Ted McMeekin Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing
