The Issue

So many students are sick of not learning anything and instead reciting and memorizing pointless things that we are never going to remember nor that will help our German. And if you're in Spanish and you are fed up with not learning anything, this applies to you too.

We have been in German class for 3 years and the majority of us can speak in little over German 1 fluency. The little learning we do receive is by scouring dictionaries , the words of which we will not remember in the long run. What will happen when we are asked to speak German? What will happen if we NEED to speak German? What about finals? Midterms? College?

The majority of us truly want to learn in this class, or at the very least don't want to sit around mindlessly recalling sentences about our past summer or weekend, and rarely even getting feedback when we make a mistake. I, along with many others, would love to finally see this class become something that we can learn from.

It doesn't matter whether you are in the class, whether you're a friend of someone in the class, or whether you are a parent. We want to learn, but we are unable to do that. We can't even go on our phones to do actual language learning, or we'll be violating the rules and missing more monotonous memorization.

It has recently come to my attention that there is a similar issue pertaining to a Spanish class in this grade. I think it is completely unjust and simply insane that teachers would allow themselves to teach so incredibly little when the outcome of the future generation rests almost entirely on their shoulders. Whichever class you are worried about, this isn't okay. Teachers should teach, not sit back and just allow their students to stumble along learning languages- the very thing that helps us all connect with one another.  The education system was built in order to educate us, not to cultivate an environment in which we struggle without meaningful improvement, nor to have a place to sit around and slack off.

Do you want to sit back and continue to roll the dice for your grade? To have to guess and revise and not learn anything? I certainly do not, but I alone cannot make this change. Thus, we need your help.

Danke sehr schön, or gracias!

We greatly appreciate any signatures, and we especially appreciate sharing this with anyone you know who thinks similarly.
