Saint Mel’s Catholic Academy remain open for our students for the 2020-2021 school year

The Issue

Saint Mel’s Catholic Academy of Flushing, NY announced without warning it is not reopening for students in September. The Brooklyn Diocese abruptly made the decision to permanently close the school. They have agreed to keep the early childhood center as a parish school. This would service Nursery, PreK, and Kindergarten. Now, it has been agreed to add first, second, and third grade. Although this is a victory, where does that leave our incoming fifth and sixth grade students? How will parents manage having children attend the early childhood program while their older siblings attend another school? Our meeting with Superintendent Chadzutko was a slap in the face. Parents were muted and not given the opportunity to speak. Only certain questions were answered and the meeting abruptly came to an end. We are pleading for  the Brooklyn Diocese to reconsider and keep the school open for all students who have committed by registering for the 2020-2021 school year. The students, families, and staff need stability during these uncertain times. We demand that this school remain open for the 2020-2021 school year. This has been a blow to our children who need their school now  more than ever. Please help us to gain support for our Saint Mel’s Catholic Academy. Please share this petition and spread the word. We need signatures and help in this fight to save our school and well being of the children who attend.
