Establish Physical Disability Sensitivity Training Programs for NYC Taxi Drivers

New York City is iconic for its yellow taxi cabs, but unfortunately the transportation systems of this city has not always been cognizant of those with physical disabilities. Given that NYC taxi cabs are one of the most frequented modes of transportation, it is essential that they be improved to help both tourists and residents who need extra assistance. There have been improvements made to address this issue, such as new car models being rolled out which are more accessible, but we felt that the problem ran deeper than merely adapting a different car model as the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission Official Taxicab Vehicle. The city government and taxi companies can do more to help!
Please sign our petition to establish a physical disability sensitivity program for NYC taxi drivers.
We are a group of high school students working on a W!SE Quality of Life project. While we are able-bodied, our research pertains to the inaccessibility of NYC yellow medallion taxis for people with physical disabilities.
We distributed a survey for people with physical disabilities in New York and asked what they thought could make NYC taxis more accessible and easier to use. The overall response showed that a majority of survey respondents felt that training taxi drivers to better accommodate them would be most beneficial.
Our recommendation would be the use of a driver behavioral training seminar that would present the perspectives and opinions of people with physical disabilities as the driving force behind it. The goal of the seminar would be to educate drivers about how to treat people with physical disabilities, in order for passengers with physical disabilities to be as comfortable as possible.
We have contacted the TLC about our research and ideas, and originally received a response, but our idea were misinterpreted. When we sent a follow-up email to clarify our recommendation, we received no response. It has been over a week, dissimilar to the hasty reply to the original email that discouraged our efforts. It is time NYC taxi companies such as TLC acknowledged that not all accommodations are physical, and continued its support of community of people with physical disabilities.
Please sign this petition and ask the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) and the NYC Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD) to establish a physical disability sensitivity program for NYC taxi drivers.
