Taung Water Petition
The Issue
TO:
1. *Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality* - Executive Mayor & Municipal Manager
2. Magalies Water Board - CEO & Board of Directors
3. *Minister of Water and Sanitation, South Africa*
PETITION
We, the undersigned residents of Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality, particularly Taung and surrounding areas, call on Magalies Water and Dr RSM District Municipality to urgently address the ongoing lack of safe, reliable drinking water in our communities.
For too long we have faced:
1. *Frequent & prolonged water cuts* lasting days and weeks with no prior notice in some areas, while places like Cokonyane have gone as long as 8 years without clean drinking water
2. *Dirty, brown, and unsafe water* coming from taps that is not fit for drinking or cooking
3. *Health risks* especially for children, the elderly, and people with chronic illnesses
4. *No clear communication* or contingency plans like water tankers during outages
Water is a constitutional right in South Africa. Section 27(1)(b) says everyone has the right to have access to sufficient water. Magalies Water is the bulk water supplier and Dr RSM DM is the Water Services Authority. Both have a legal duty to ensure we get clean & safe water.
*We demand the following immediate actions:*
1. *Emergency water supply*: Deploy water tankers, without charging Community Members, to affected areas within 24 hours of any outage
2. *Fix infrastructure*: Repair and upgrade bulk water supply, pumps, and reservoirs that serve ALL TAUNG COMMUNITIES
3. *Weekly water quality testing*: Publish results publicly so residents know if water is safe
4. *Clear communication plan*: SMS, radio, and WhatsApp alerts before any planned cutoffs
5. *Accountability report*: Public report within seven(7) days on what caused the failures and the plan to fix them permanently
We too, deserve dignity.
We cannot keep buying water from water tankers because it is very expensive and unfair on us to be deliberately deprived of our basic Human Right.
Act now. Our parents' health and our children’s future depend on it.
