NEW DATE FOR GRANDSTAND UNEARTHED!
Yesterday we found out that the Grandstand was built in 1899!
Many thanks to Jane McDonald who undertook a huge amount of research and discovered the correct year of construction (it was supposed until now to have been built in 1909) .
This earlier date of construction increases its heritage value considerably and we hope this will prove a further encouragement to Council to keep it.
A Nelson Evening Mail article of 2 February 1900 reported:
'The commodious grand stand, with the luncheon room and bar, which has been erected on the ground since last year, proved a great convenience, and added greatly to the completeness of the general arrangements.'
In 1911 the roof was added which 'proved a vast improvement on the old open top, and was well patronised by the public.'
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES PETITION now at MONZA
Many thanks to Philly Hall for offering to host our House of Representatives petition.
Please pass on to residents of Golden Bay who support the new Recreation Facility but want to retain the Grandstand that they can sign this petition at MONZA Gallery.
Because this petition is being prepared for presentation to the House of Representatives it requires original signatures so if change.org petition signatories wish to be part of the House of Representatives petition, please drop in to MONZA and sign against your name.
DEMOLITION COST REVEALED
Whilst we reiterate that we look forward to the new Recreation Facilities at the showgrounds, we think it would be short-sighted to have a serviceable heritage building demolished at a cost of $40,000 when that already-budgeted amount could upgrade the present elevated and covered seating we already have.
We thank you for your continuing support and will keep you posted with any news and progress!
