Don't Open on Thanksgiving

Black Friday use to be just that, on Friday. But over the last few years, stores have started opening earlier and earlier. Now, stores are opening on Thanksgiving Day in the pursuit of ever bigger holiday profits. This comes at the expense of retail workers, who will spend the day at work instead of with their families. It’s time to return Black Friday to its rightful place: Friday.
Target is one of the biggest, most respected retailers in the country, and it happens to be the place I work. I love working there and am proud of how seriously we take customer service. But there are some days when Target must put its workers first. Thanksgiving is one of those days. Other retailers have pledged to not open on Thanksgiving -- most recently, outdoor retailer REI. I sincerely hope that Target will do the same.
I’m calling on Target to put people over profits and close this Thanksgiving Day. The shoppers and sales can wait 24 hours so your workers can spend time with their families and friends.
I started working at Target over 9 years ago. As a retail worker, you know that there will be crazy hours and you have to be available during the holiday season. However, it’s also understood that you get Thanksgiving and Christmas Days off. Over time, that has changed, and we are now expected to come in early Thanksgiving morning and stay until late that night, missing the holiday altogether.
Thanksgiving is one of the few holidays that celebrates family and community, no matter your faith or cultural background. We need leaders like Target to push back against the shopping frenzy, and help keep the Thanksgiving tradition alive.
Tell Target to help keep Thanksgiving alive by not opening until Black Friday.
