The current uniform policy at Taradale High has the rule of one piercing in each ear. This rule has become increasingly inconvenient for students and should be revisited. Students should be wearing whatever piercings they want to, and these piercings can be removed or covered with tape in PE, trades, etc for health and safety reasons. Or, the rules should at least be reconsidered and a new uniform standard set. For example: only a certain number of piercings in each ear, at a certain size with only gold/ silver jewelry. This is just an example, and a specific new standard should be decided by both students and the school if this change goes ahead. Either way, a change needs to be seen that allows more flexibility and ease for students.

Students shouldn’t be punished for being creative and showing self-expression. Schools banning forms of individual expression in general is wrong (for example, hair colour). It is often argued that piercings can distract from learning, but being told to take out piercings is equally distracting, if not more so. Not to mention the process of collecting them again after they have been confiscated is another distraction from learning.

Piercings are a long-term commitment and can have long healing periods, so if you had to take them out for school, the piercing may close back up or get infected if you're removing and inserting the jewelry multiple times a day, especially with newer piercings. How you look outside of school shouldn't have to revolve around school rules.

It’s about expression and individuality. Having a piercing doesn’t distract you from working hard in school. Being confident in your own body and its appearance is important, and irrelevant to learning at school. School should be a place to find yourself, your interests, and who you want to become in the world- so let's change this rule. Thank you.
